What Is AP YSR Kalyanamasthu?
AP YSR Kalyanamasthu is a marriage assistance scheme for poor families in Andhra Pradesh. A daughter’s marriage is one of the biggest expenses for a poor family, and many families borrow money at high interest to pay for it. Kalyanamasthu was started to give such families a fixed help of Rs 1 lakh, so that the marriage could be performed without falling into debt.
The scheme covered girls from SC, ST, BC and other poor families. Shaadi Tohfa was the same scheme for Muslim minority families, with the same amount of Rs 1 lakh and the same conditions. The two names exist because Shaadi Tohfa is run through the minority welfare department, while Kalyanamasthu is run through the social welfare and BC welfare departments. The money, the conditions and the application process were the same for both.
The amount was paid to the mother of the bride, directly into her bank account, after the marriage was verified by the secretariat. The marriage had to be registered, and the bride and the groom had to meet the legal age for marriage. For how to register a marriage, see our guide to the AP Marriage Certificate.
Who Was Eligible for AP YSR Kalyanamasthu?
These conditions applied for AP YSR Kalyanamasthu and Shaadi Tohfa:
- The bride must be 18 years or older, and the groom must be 21 years or older, on the date of marriage.
- The bride should have passed Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent. This condition was kept to encourage girls to continue their education.
- The family must be poor, with a white ration card, and the family income must be below the limit fixed by the government.
- The bride must be a resident of Andhra Pradesh.
- The marriage must be the first marriage of the bride.
- The family must have a bank account in the mother’s name, linked to Aadhaar, so that the money can be paid by Direct Benefit Transfer.
For Shaadi Tohfa, the bride must belong to a Muslim minority family. For Kalyanamasthu, the bride could belong to any poor family. Only one daughter’s marriage per family could get the assistance in a year in most cases, and the secretariat verified the details before approving. If the bride had not passed Intermediate, the family could not get this assistance, but the daughter could continue her studies with the help of Jagananna Vidya Deevena and Free Intermediate Education in AP.
How Much Did AP YSR Kalyanamasthu Pay?
AP YSR Kalyanamasthu paid Rs 1,00,000 for the marriage of a daughter. Shaadi Tohfa paid the same Rs 1,00,000. The amount was paid in one instalment, after the marriage, into the bank account of the bride’s mother. There was no monthly payment and no second instalment.
The amount was fixed. It did not change with the caste or the community of the family. The earlier scheme, Chandranna Pelli Kanuka, had paid Rs 50,000, and Kalyanamasthu doubled it to Rs 1 lakh. The money was meant to cover a part of the marriage expenses, not the whole cost, and it was paid only after the marriage was verified, so that the assistance was not misused.

These documents were needed to apply for AP YSR Kalyanamasthu and Shaadi Tohfa:

How to Apply for AP YSR Kalyanamasthu
Follow these steps, which were used when the scheme was open for applications:
- Visit the nearest Village or Ward Secretariat before the marriage, with the documents listed above and the wedding invitation card.
- Submit the application at the secretariat. The staff would enter your details and give you an acknowledgement.
- The application was verified by the secretariat and the welfare department.
- After the marriage, the secretariat verified that the marriage had taken place and that it was registered.
- On approval, the Rs 1,00,000 was credited to the mother’s bank account by Direct Benefit Transfer, and a message was sent to the mobile number.
The application had to be made before the marriage. Families who applied after the marriage were usually not considered. That is why the secretariat asked for the wedding invitation card at the time of application. If the marriage was postponed, the family had to inform the secretariat and give the new date.
